Fandoms that Surprised me
I took a mental break on Monday, that’s why there was no blog. Monday started with taking the car that we have owned for six months to get the brakes fixed only to be told that it was much more expensive then it the vehicle is worth. That sent us into the decision process again, couple that with processing a movie that we had seen on Saturday that was good but also made me feel all the feels. My brain couldn’t process writing a blog. I tried, but after four attempted blogs I moved on to allowing my mind to the breath and just process.
Fandom has always been my escape. I remember coming home from school and reading graphic novels. They were my escape from usually a bad day at school. Or to avoid talking to my family and ignoring the anger I felt from moving.
Here are some fandoms that surprised that I thought I wouldn’t like, but I do.
Jurassic Park franchise
My Brother, the Dude was always excited about dinosaurs, I was 7 when this blockbuster franchise started, and I remember watching this with my parents at home. Since I am now an adult, I have probably seen the original perhaps 20 times. Between cable showings at a hotel and watching with Dude who loves this film. Now if you asked me why I like this film, I don’t know. Characters are horrible people. The dinosaurs are ferocious and have been haunting my dreams for years. I have a fear of Alligators. So why do I like this movie? I think it was the first action movie I saw. And the nostalgia of this movie. I think it was also a way for Dude and me to connect. It makes a bad day a little bit better.
Star Wars
I grew up in the ’90s. We had a VCR and Vhs tapes. We recorded shows, and my Dad had all of them for his James Bond films. So we had like 3 to use for recording something. At the end of one our tapes was the famous scene of Luke Skywalker getting his arm chopped off. If you haven’t seen it. Sorry for spoiling it, but it’s been out for 39 years, you should watch it. Darth Vader is scary and to a young girl who just wanted to record her shows. Then I went into High School, and Star Wars came out of the prequels, and I fell in love with it. Suddenly I watched it with new eyes and fell in love with Princess Leia. She was fierce and strong but also soft and feminine.
NCIS
NCIS. This show has been on for 16 years, and it is a roller coaster. I remember watching the first episode with my Dad when we watched Jag. Papa Bear and I didn’t have many shows that we liked, but we agreed on JAG. I remember thinking during this episode why were the characters so upset about the death of the mean girl on the naval base. NCIS is one of the fandoms that we haven’t watched all the times, but when we have, I’ve enjoyed it.
Harry Potter
I avoided this one when all the panic of the books released. I did pretty well, until College when I had to read the first one. By this time I all the books were published. Now let me say that Harry Potter is a jerk. He is rude to others. I like this series because of the strong female characters in the series. Heriome, Luna and Ginny. I love this series because of Neville. I love the fights against darkness and light. This book series where the secondary characters are more interesting than the main character.
Smallville
This was Jman’s favorite tv show for years. The campy and action-packed show about Clark Kent’s high school years. This show lasted ten years. I didn’t like that much at them, but by the end of the show, I loved it. I remember feeling sad that it ended and happy that the characters that we had rooted for had a happy ending.
